The Chief of the Police Mayor General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez said that investigations showed that Juan Fragoso, the driver of the petrol tanker, is to blame. The explosion caused a major traffic jam at Km. 91 (La Ceiba) on Duarte Highway on Friday, 22 June 2012 around 1:15pm and seven fire engine trucks and around 60 men had to come from Bonao city, and nearby La Vega, Juma and Sabana del Puerto to combat the flames. The fire was put out four hours later. The firemen were able to stop the fire from catching on to the thatched roof of the Bonao parador where the driver had stopped for lunch. The parador is near to a propane gas station.

The Police say that the driver was irregularly transferring petrol in combination with other men for unauthorized resale. Polanco Gomez said that companies monitor the trucks by GPS. That was the reason the transshipment of fuel was being carried out at the regular lunch stop that was on the driver's route. Polanco said in a press conference that has been found to be a common practice for petrol drivers. There were no human tragedies on the day of the blast that destroyed the truck. The Mack truck, operated by Centinela, was loaded with 9,000 gallons of gasoline and 3,000 of diesel.

Chief of the Firemen of Bonao, Modesto Espinal told Hoy: "This is not a gas station. We, as firemen, have never received a request to install a fueling station at that stop. We do not know for what reason that has been operating there."
