National Drug Control Department (NDCD) agents, in coordination with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the US Coastguard Service intercepted a shipment of 1,000 kilos of cocaine in international waters 177 kilometers south of Bani, in the southwest. The DNCD reported the drugs had been shipped from South America. Three Colombians Richard Chirino, Eliezer Hernandez and Cruz Natera Fermin were arrested, according to the statement from the DNCD.

The DNCD says they are part of the Colombian network that uses remnants of the team of Ramon Rosario Puente (Tono Lena) network. Rosario Puente was extradited to Puerto Rico in December 2011. The drugs and the arrested were taken to Puerto Rico.

This is the second important seizure of drugs so far this year. In March, the DNCD seized a shipment in high seas off Juan Dolio where 1,236 packages of 1 kilo each of cocaine were seized.

Drugs imported to the DR are shipped to Europe and the US.
