Dominican gymnast Yamilet Pena won the gold medal in the senior women's vault event at the 2012 Junior and Senior Pan-American Championships in Artistic Gymnastics held 21-24 June 2012 in Medellin, Colombia. Pena will be competing in the London Olympics.
The Pan American championships featured apparatus championships for seniors, as well as team, all-around and event awards for juniors.
Yamilet made 14,500 points, to defeat Paula Mejias from Puerto Rico (14,000) and Adrian Nunes from Brazil (13,850). Competing were athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Participating in the championships were 17 countries. The event included for the first time ever both junior and senior competitions, with the latter competing in Apparatus Finals only.
The events took place at the Coliseo de Gimnasia Jorge Hugo Giraldo and included local star and Beijing Olympian Jorge Hugo Giraldo Lopez (COL) and Dominican Yamilet Pena that are soon to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games, including local star and Beijing Olympian Jorge Hugo Giraldo Lopez (COL).
