An estimated 133,000 high school seniors are set to take the National Standardized Educational Tests starting tomorrow, Wednesday 27 June. This number includes 31,271 students who have tests pending from former years. Some 31% of the students registered in the fourth year of high school were excluded from these tests because they have yet to pass certain courses. Only students who have passed their grade are eligible for the National Tests. The successful passing of these tests is one of the pre-requisites for obtaining admission into any university degree program.

Monte Plata (83.51%) had the highest percentage of its 12th grade students invited to the examinations, followed by San Francisco de Macoris, San Pedro de Macoris and Santo Domingo. The two provinces with the lowest percentages were San Juan de la Maguana (52.85%) and Higuey (56.44%). According to Ancell Scheker, the director of the testing program at the Ministry of Education, the 31,271 students will have 18,320 taking the math test, 16,076 will take the Spanish test, 12,210 will take the Social Science test and 15,728 will take the Natural Science test. Obviously, some students will be taking more than one test!
