Yesterday, Tuesday 26 June, President-elect Danilo Medina returned to the Presidential Palace for the first time since November 2006 when he resigned as Secretary to the Presidency. At the time he resigned due to differences with President Leonel Fernandez over who should be the presidential candidate for the PLD in the lead up to the 2008 presidential election. Medina was invited to discuss topics on the national and international agenda followed by lunch.

Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, Presidency Minister Cesar Pina Toribio, Economy and Planning Minister Temistocles Montas and PLD Executive Committee member Abel Rodriguez del Orbe were also present.

First Lady and Vice President-elect Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez and future First Lady Candida Montilla attended the lunch.

Speaking afterwards, Medina took the opportunity to explain why he had not been available to the press, stating that that he was aware of the responsibilities facing the country and was spending his time preparing the measures he would take once he assumes power on 16 August.

Medina said that he had not made any decisions on fiscal reform because his team was still working on the information, but he would inform the press about their plans when the work was concluded.

As far as the challenges facing the country were concerned, he said that he was working, exploring and using the available information in order to implement the right measures from 16 August.
