President Leonel Fernandez called on Dominicans in New York to vote for New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat (57 years), but the plea was not enough and rival Charles Rangel (82 years) won his re-election bid in the Democratic primary election. Rangel will now be seeking his 22nd term in Congress.

According to Espaillat's official campaign website, Fernandez backed the candidate as a prime example of a Dominican in New York who has demonstrated leadership, commitment and dedication throughout his career and called on Dominicans to vote for him. Espaillat would have been the first Dominican-born congressman had he defeated Mr. Rangel and won the November election. But his chances of winning the candidacy were affected when the vote was also split between three other candidates, including Clyde Williams, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, and Joyce Johnson, a former local Democratic district leader.

Conceding defeat on Wednesday, 27 June, Espaillat said, "We came in slightly short this time. The summer of 2012 will always be remembered as the summer when northern Manhattan came together." He pledged to work with Rangel, saying, "We will be working with him to make sure the community gets what it deserves to get."

Former President Hipolito Mejia of the PRD had also urged Dominicans in New York to back Espaillat.
