Analysis by researchers at the Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Investigations (IDIAF) of the official figures from the 9th National Population and Housing Census 2010 shows that the Dominican population should be 10,240,790 as opposed to the government figure of 9,445,281.

Economist Pedro Juan del Rosario and agronomist Julio Morrobel believe that 795,509 people could have been left out of the figures.

They also questioned the criteria for urban demarcation that led to the conclusion that the rural population had declined by 26% in 2010.

They said that according to the data there were 434,995 unoccupied homes in 2010, an increase of 190,032 (78%) over 2002, as reported in Diario Libre.
