Yesterday, Tuesday 28 June, the Ministry of Public Health said that it had closed three medical establishments in Herrera and Los Alcarrizos in Santo Domingo because they had been carrying out abortions, as reported in the Listin Diario. Abortion is banned in the Dominican Republic.

This brings the total to eight centers that have been closed in under a week for operating without the necessary accreditation and in violation of the health regulations.

The establishments that were carrying out illegal abortions in Herrera were the Santos Brito clinic on Calle Las Palmas de Herrera, the Herrera Pina clinic on Calle Mexico and Sanchez Urena consulting rooms on Calle Duarte in Los Alcarrizos.

The Santos Brito clinic was operating without official accreditation and offered abortions under the promotion of "special services", a practice that is forbidden by the Constitution and laws of the DR.

According to the Health Ministry, the Herrera Pina clinic was only authorized for consultations and emergency medicine but was also carrying out abortions and providing laboratory services without meeting minimum hygiene standards, placing the health and lives of its patients in danger

Sanchez Urena consulting rooms in Los Alcarrizos also did not meet health standards and was being run by general practitioner Juan Manuel Sanchez, whose license had expired in October 2011.
