At a mass to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the General Office of Prisons, it was revealed that 68.4 % of prison inmates in the country are on remand and only 31.6% of the total of 22,719 have actually been convicted, as reported in El Dia.

The figure breaks down to 22,119 men and 600 women. 1,125 are Haitian and 200 are other foreign nationalities.

The mass was celebrated by the assistant bishop of Santo Domingo, Pablo Cedano who said that the objective of prisons was to reform people who had committed crimes against society and called for a prison system where convicts could leave jail after their sentence was completed with their heads held high.

Prisons Director Mario Acosta highlighted the advances in the system and said that they were committed to providing the country with security, correction and reintegration.
