The Popular Front (FALPO) has described the plight of the people who were injured during the recent protests in Salcedo as both difficult and dramatic, saying that many did not go to hospital out of fear caused by the psychological trauma of the aggression inflicted by the military and police. Local FALPO spokesman Rafael Ramos said he had met with his associates from San Francisco de Macoris after some people had been shot and taken the victims to hospital there.

He said that several people had been shot in the legs, some repeatedly, some forced to walk with these injuries, some doctors refused to treat them and some had to go to several hospitals looking for someone who would help them.

He gave several examples of people who had suffered in this way and condemned the action of the police and military.

The violence in Salcedo was followed by a domino effect after the murder of Hector Ramon Medina on 12 May. Many protested against the death and the Police's failure to investigate the incident that occurred on 13 June. Then on 15 June, military and police forces took to the streets of Salcedo to repress hundreds who attended the burial at the Cristo Vive cemetery of two of four people who died in protests demanding a solution to the murder of Hector Ramon Medina. Falpo spokesmen accused the government and Senator Luis Rene Canaan of complicity in the death and of blaming it on Falpo.

Speaking on TV today, Wednesday 27 June, the Senator blamed limitations of government public policies, lack of jobs and financing from opposition politicians for what he described as "the anarchy and terrorist acts" that have affected the capital of the Hermanas Mirabal province in recent weeks. Canaan, speaking on Pablo McKinney's Bulevar talk show, accused elements linked to the PPH (the PRD faction that backs former President Hipolito Mejia) for causing the protests. He described them as the "electoral hangover." He said that wealthy elements and what he called "the underground" were financing the protests.
