Director-general Jose Graziano da Silva of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that President Leonel Fernandez will be chairing a high-level debate at the FAO on the causes and consequences of excessive volatility and speculation in food prices at the FAO Headquarters in Rome on 6 July 2012 .

The debate seeks to come up with proposals for concrete measures to address this challenge to food security.

The event follows up on the resolution "Addressing Excessive Price Volatility in Food and Related Financial and Commodity Markets" that was introduced at the United Nations by President Leonel Fernandez in December 2011 and was adopted by consensus.

At the time, the UN General Assembly invited all relevant UN agencies, especially the FAO, to take an active part in discussing this issue and to continue conducting research and analysis. As mandated in the resolution, a high-level thematic debate was held on the topic on 11 April 2012 with the active involvement of the FAO.

The 6 July event is being held to enable further exchanges on the extent to which speculation on commodity futures markets has contributed to food price volatility and on associated regulatory issues.

During the meeting, President Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to make the keynote address and the concluding remarks.
