The country's consumer watchdog, ProConsumidor, is preparing the way for a first Dominican "chicken-free day" as a way of protesting the high prices for poultry meat. According to reports in the media yesterday, Wednesday 27 June, speculation by producers is behind the price increases. The head of Pro Consumidor is calling on the government to issue poultry import permits as a way of forcing down the price of the most popular of all local meats.

In a paid advertisement in Diario Libre, the Dominican Poultry Producers Association (ADA) countered the accusations of speculation, saying that at US$74 per hundredweight (qq), prices in the Dominican Republic are lower than in many other places in the region, and gave the examples of Panama and Puerto Rico where poultry was more expensive than the DR. The ADA adds that they supply 14.5 million chickens a month for local consumption and make the point they are the producers, not the distributors.
