Today, Friday 29 June, President Leonel Fernandez and Education Minister Josefina Pimentel will launch the "Recognition of Teaching Excellence" program to commemorate Teachers Day on Saturday.
They will begin by presenting the Medal of Teaching Merit to three teachers during a ceremony at the National Palace.
This will be followed by a series of activities organized by the Education Ministry (MINERD), including a mass to pray for the health of teachers and pay homage to those who have died. A floral tribute will be laid to the Founding Fathers in Independence Park.
The activities will continue in the afternoon with plaques awarded to 104 teachers, and a gala lunch.
Pimentel said that being a teacher is not only about teaching how to read and write and learning mathematics, but also about helping children to learn to think, to grow and to live as model citizens and be worthy representatives of the country.
She said that Teachers Day was a time when pupils could express their love, respect, admiration and thanks to their teachers as there was no better encouragement for teachers than to know that they are making a positive difference in the lives of their pupils.
