According to El Nacional, around three million chickens have suffocated to death in the Cibao area due to the heat, with losses amounting to millions of pesos, according to the chicken farmers.

The figure represents around 15 to 20 percent of the total chicken population in the country of around 25 million.

The chicken farmers said that if the heat wave continues throughout the summer it could have catastrophic results.

Chicken farming expert Rolando Alba said that high temperatures stopped the chickens from eating and puts them in a state of permanent stress. He said that only chickens that were raised in controlled environments could cope well in hot weather, and that the heat also lowered their fertility levels.
