Armed gang members have been imposing terror in Bonao with a spate of murders and generally challenging authority. In fact, some 25 people, most of them young, have been murdered by these criminals so far this year. This has forced many local residents to change habits of a lifetime in order to protect themselves.
The most recent victims include Albert de Jesus Acosta Mata, 23, an employee of a private company, who was decapitated and his head thrown into a latrine, causing consternation the people of the city. Yesterday, Monday 2 July, a teacher was stabbed to death by thieves who stole his laptop. The victim, who was identified as Cicilio Ferrer Fragoso, 59, was found gagged and bound in a bedroom in his home. He had been stabbed in the chest, according to the medical examiner.
According to local sources, most of the members of these anti-social groups, also called gangs, are teenage alcoholics who have no fear of the justice system because the full weight of the law is only applied when they are over 18 years of age. According to the Catholic Church, at least 12 gangs are active in the province of Monsignor Nouel, including "Los Netas" and the "Latin Kings", said to be responsible for most of these crimes. The spokesman for the Permanent Committee against Violence and Drugs in Bonao, Pedro Tineo, attributed the increase in crime to the unemployment caused by the closure of several factories in industrial free zones.
