The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has confiscated 722 packages of cocaine weighing a total 767.38 kilograms, part of a consignment being transported in speedboats in an operation that took place at the mouth of the Soco River, involving boats and helicopters.
Four Dominicans were arrested: Miguel Zapata de La Rosa, Roberto Octavio Pena Cordero, Julio Cesar Madrigal Garcia and Rudy de Jesus Galvez, who were reported to have been working together with Colombians.
A fifth man, Raul Perez Cuevas, died after being injured during the chase. Two of the men who were arrested have prior prosecutions on drugs charges. One of the speedboats got away.
DNCD chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said that the operation had been planned for several weeks following intelligence that there is a large group of drug dealers operating in the east of the country composed of Colombians, Venezuelans and Dominicans.
