Today is the 30th anniversary of the suspected suicide of President Silvestre Antonio Guzman Fernandez of the PRD, who died 43 days before his term of office was over on July 4, 1982.
Guzman Fernandez, who is described a modest, straightforward and likeable man, is remembered by Dominicans as one of the best presidents who came after Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.
He was a farmer and businessman, born in La Vega and was 71 years old when he died due to a gunshot to the head. There are various theories as to why he supposedly committed suicide, although some believe he was murdered.
