The Central Bank admitted yesterday, Wednesday 4 July, that governor Hector Valdez Albizu had met with the executive director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington to discuss the possibility the agency might sign an agreement with the new administration. According to Mayelin Acosta Guzman of Hoy newspaper, the Central Bank governor visited the IMF offices earlier this week to coordinate details of the regional meeting scheduled to take place in the DR later this month. Several economists are suggesting that the new administration should deal with the deficit (they say is around RD$73 billion) that it will inherit from the current administration by talking to the IMF. Eduardo Tejera noted the need for measures, since he indicated that the Supplementary Budget is an indication of the serious problems facing the administration. Tejera suggested a Stand-by arrangement rather than a precautionary agreement as suggested by President-elect Medina.
