Barely 17.6% of the commercial banks total loan portfolio goes to the productive sector, while 73.4% goes to the areas of commerce and services. According to Diario Libre, this leads producers to complain that not enough resources are going to the farming sector for food production, and that they have to go to the informal sector for money in order to produce.

Of a loan portfolio of RD$414.8 billion, carried by the multiple service banks as of 27 June 2012, some RD$72.9 billion are destined to the productive sector, according to Central Bank figures. Some RD$304.5 billion in loans goes to the commercial and services sectors, which means that these sectors get 73.4% of the loans issued by the multi-service banks. Of the total portfolio of resources of the commercial banks, the public sector received RD$37.4 billion, which represents just 9% of the portfolio. In the meantime, the private sector was loaned RD$377.4 billion, or 91% of all loans.
