The Dominican population has multiplied 4.42 times since 1950, going from 2.1 million in 1960 to 9.4 million in 2010. However, in terms of volume, there was a slowing down of the population growth rate, according to the National Statistics Office (ONE). The agency noted the reduced growth rate beginning in 1960 was probably due to the introduction of family planning. In the 1960s the fertility rate for women was placed at 7.1 live births per woman between the ages of 25 and 49. In the 1970s this rate decreased to 5.8 children and in 2007 it was 2.5.
