On his stopover in Rome, President Leonel Fernandez yesterday, 5 July, met with Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Vatican Cultural Committee and announced that the Dominican Republic and the Vatican would organize "days of reflection" on the socio-cultural problems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Dominican Presidency reports that Ravasi thanked President Fernandez for his hospitality at the International Book Fair in Santo Domingo that this year was dedicated to the Vatican. Ravasi said the Dominican Republic, a multi-cultural country thanks to tourism, is the ideal place to hold the debates. He also argued that the island was where evangelism started in the Americas and is the site of the first cathedral and university of the New World.
