According to Ligia Bonetti, president of the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD), in the last 10 years the industrial sector, including the free zones, have lost 100,000 jobs, but there is optimism for a reversal of the situation.

Bonetti made the comment whilst presenting the latest data on the Industrial Situation that showed a slight improvement in the situation of industry, with an increase of 1.4% in formal employment in the sector for the second quarter of 2012. The same poll had showed that in the first quarter the expectations were for a decline of 4%, as reported in Diario Libre.

She said that formal employment is very precious as it delivers stability and industrial development not only to the country but also socially.

Another positive aspect of the survey was that businesses are investing to increase production capacity, especially in plant machinery and equipment, technology and transport. She said that 59.7% of businesses said that they were thinking of making investments in the next quarter.

The survey indicated industrialists perceive the low purchasing power of consumers, increase in costs including for energy, fuel and raw material as obstacles to investment.

Ligia Bonetti said that the sector has plans to create 300,000 jobs in the next five years, if commitments established together with the government are met. She said there are 400,000 jobs in industry.
