Protests in San Francisco de Macoris led the governor of Duarte province and the provisional prosecutors to lobby for the arrest of the lead suspect of the murder of Puro Enmanuel Diaz Lopez of a bullet shot in his back on 3 June. The pressure resulted in police agent Marino Alonso Torres being arrested and eventually sentenced to three months preventive custody.

Hoy reports today that the now removed chief of the northeastern command of the Police in San Francisco, General Brigade Miguel Raul de la Cruz Reyna himself had been covering for the agent that was the lead suspect in the killing. San Francisco de Macoris prosecutors would ask the judge that he be allowed to post bail as the case was heard in court. Judge Isolina Peralta Contreras, nevertheless, would order the three months preventive custody that was requested by the lawyers of the relatives of Diaz Lopez. When the decision was heard in a court full of police agents these would meet at the Police station and then head out to the jail where the agent was kept to of their own right forcibly arrange for his release to them. The case made national headlines when it was covered on video by the San Francisco local press. The San Francisco police argued the preventive custody was unfair because the agent was just fulfilling his duty.

Eventually, the Police removed General de la Cruz from the post.
