It was a worthy try, with Dominicans still celebrating the victory over Macedonia, but the team did not make it. In the end, during the 12-team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Caracas, Venezuela, the Dominican team failed to win one of 3 last slots available for the Olympics. After falling to Lithuania, the DR lost its final chance to Nigeria 88 to 73 on Sunday, 8 July. The game had been tied in the fourth quarter with 5:34 minutes to go, but then Nigeria pulled away.
Russia (ranked 11th), Lithuania (ranked 5th) and Nigeria (ranked 21st) qualified for the Olympics in the tournament.
The teams that will compete in the London Olympics basketball and their rankings going into the Olympics are: Lithuania (5), Tunisia (32), USA (1), France (12), Nigeria (21), Argentina (3), China (10), Great Britain (43), Brazil (13), Australia (9), Russia (11) and Spain (2).
