Several of the most famous Spanish and Cuban zarzuelas, and a first Dominican zarzuela written by maestro Julio Alberto Hernandez, will be staged at the National Theater this coming Friday, 13 and Saturday, 14 July in the major production, Antologia de la Zarzuela. Stars of the evening include lyric singers from Venezuela and Cuba, and performances by popular Dominican singers Maridalia Hernandez and Nini Caffaro.
The zarzuela is a genre that features operatic lyric singing but also includes spoken scenes, popular song and dance.
Edgar Perez Martinez will be performing as a tenor, and is also the general producer. With him, Venezuelan Carlos Andres Mejia as maestro director; Cuban Anton Fustier, artistic director; Venezuelan Jose Rafael Pereda as director of scenography; Uruguayan Maria Antunez, soprano; Venezuelan Gaspar Colon Moleiro, baritone; Cuban Humbero Bernal, tenor; Puerto Rico's Melliangee Perez Maldonado, soprano. Also responsible for production and singing those evenings are Dominicans Maridalia Hernandez, singer; Juan Cuevas, tenor; Ivan Garcia, actor; Ivan Miura, costumes; Jose Miura, scenography; Eduardo Villanueva, script; Armando Gonzalez, choreography, and the Dominican Philarmonic Choir and Orchestra.
