On occasion of the visit of President Leonel Fernandez to the European Council headquarters in Brussels, yesterday, Tuesday 10 July, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy commented on the progress made with relations between the European Union and the Dominican Republic during the administration of President Leonel Fernandez and said he was confident that this cooperation would continue in the future.

Speaking of the existing cooperation framework with the country, Mr. Van Rompuy said: "We are interested in increasing dialogue and cooperation with the Dominican Republic in the areas of human rights, counternarcotics, business climate, the security of investments, competitiveness, trade, and relations with Haiti.

Van Rompuy also said that the Dominican Republic was a good example of a country that has progressed despite the adverse economic climate and he also highlighted the good relationships the DR had with Haiti that he said is crucial.

Fernandez thanked Van Rompuy for his work in the fight against the economic crisis and confirmed that his country wished to continue forging ties with Europe.

In a press statement, he said that relations were "on track" and pointed to the fact that the EU is the second trading partner of the Dominican Republic and the biggest foreign investor in the country. The European Union is the first development partner of the Dominican Republic with a program worth more than Euro 280 million.
