Speaking on the television program Matinal, former President Hipolito Mejia confirmed yesterday, Tuesday 10 July, that he has concrete evidence that there was a supposed agreement between PRD party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado and President Leonel Fernandez against his candidacy in this year's presidential election. He complained the elections had been won with the abusive use of state money, of power, and the use of the military and police in favor of the government. Vargas Maldonado signed the important Pact of the Blue Collars that gave Congress green light to pass constitutional revision that enabled former President Hipolito Mejia to run in the 2012 election and President Fernandez to seek a 4th term in 2016.
Mejia said that from now on we would see the disastrous consequences of having spent this money in the electoral process, and he accused President Fernandez of having meddled in the internal affairs of the PRD.
He went on to day that the PRD is a democratic party. He said that party strongman, the late Francisco Pena Gomez had taught that when matters were discussed, members views were taken into account. He denied that the current problems were the result of a fight between him and Vargas Maldonado as was being stated by the press, but rather were a fight between the party and one man who wanted to violate the rules and laws of the party.
He said that matters should be resolved by the party itself, and that he was open to dialogue to solve the internal problems to be able to develop an opposition to the PLD.
