A documentary that opens in US cinemas on Friday that focuses on scouting corruption and exploitation and at the same time seeks to answer the question of why Dominicans are so good at baseball is making headlines in the United States.

Already, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has gone to the Boston Red Sox with complaints. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine produced the film about Dominican prospects. Selig says the film is not accurate because many of the issues have been rectified since 2009, the period covered by the film. Valentine himself spent time coaching and scouting in the Dominican Republic.

"Ballplayer: Pelotero," tracks corruption in the process of signing Dominican amateurs, and tells how young Dominican players are scouted and brought to the Major Leagues.

"Ballplayer: Pelotero" opens this week at the Maysles Cinema and Quad Cinema in New York City and the Laemmle Music Hall in Los Angeles.
