Using the slogan "There is a time to be a father and a mother" the Public Health authorities, together with the United Nations Population Fund, has launched a campaign to prevent teen pregnancies in the province of Azua. A recent study by the UNPFA shows that 37% of teenage girls in Azua are, or have been, pregnant. El Caribe says that the province, with a population of 214,000, including 68,000 between the ages of 10 and 12, was chosen by the UN agency for the start of the teenage pregnancy prevention campaign. The study also found that 22% of adolescents in the province do not know how to read or write, 18% have left school and suffer from psychological problems and depression. This leads to babies being born underweight and with other problems. The program will begin with sex education classes in the schools, where the children will learn to talk about sex without taboos.
