Friar Santiago Bautista, the parish priest at San Miguel Church, suggested yesterday, Wednesday 11 July that the National Congress should modify Law 139-07 that moves public holidays and creates long weekends, "because the accumulation of the holidays promotes laziness in this country." Friar Bautista suggested a return to the old system of holidays from 15 years ago. He said that the long weekends only lead to drinking sprees, accidents and mourning.
As reported in Hoy, the good father was echoing statements by Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez and other personalities who have asked the country to stop "burying the celebration of dates on which events of great significance occurred." He would like to see Dominicans celebrate 16 July, the day on which the Trinitarios were established by Dominican Republic founding father Juan Pablo Duarte.
