The District Attorney for the National District Yeni Berenice Reynoso says that Jose Angel Gomez Canaan (Jochy), according to intelligence sources, was supposedly involved in extortion and blackmail of third parties using electronic media, as well as in spying on well-known personalities. She said that on 10 January, the Justice Department requested the SMS messages from a telephone number allegedly used by the son of journalist Guillermo Gomez. The Justice Department was able to see the conversations, which contained offers of spying on mobile phones as well as an alleged request by Gomez Canaan to hack into an e-mail account.
According to the District Attorney, in one conversation they were able to note that the person under investigation asked a person named Rajat, thought to be an Indian national, for help in hijacking the e-mail account.
The authorities say that Gomez Canaan allegedly carried out the interference and sent e-mails based on identity theft and illegal access from his home. He was arrested on Monday, 9 July and taken to the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva. The arrest came after a search of his father's house in the Los Cacicazgos sector of Santo Domingo. He has been detained on two previous occasions, the last being on 20 May this year.
