The Dominican team defeated Macedonia and South Korea at the Olympics Qualifier held in Venezuela, but lost to Russia, Lithuania and Nigeria, the teams that won the three slots available at the Qualifier. The team coached by John Calipari of the University of Kentucky, will now match what is probably its toughest team ever when it takes on the US Dream Team in an exhibition game in Las Vegas, Nevada. While an exhibition game, the US is not expected to give the Dominicans a chance.
News commentators are recommending that the United States basketball team put the fear of God into their future competition in the Olympics by destroying the Dominican Republic squad. "Perception is reality, and the way this team performs during these exhibitions will determine how teams perceive them in London," writes one observer in the Bleacher Report.
Writing about the game, Diario Libre reports today on a detail that few know. In 1989 at the Pre-World Championship in Mexico, the Dominican basketball team defeated the United States 116-108. But on seven other occasions when the two teams have met, the DR team has lost to the US.
