Yesterday, Thursday 12 July, the Minister for Women, Alejandrina German, announced that a 24-hour emergency telephone line has been set up to help women who are being mistreated and to prevent more femicides. There were 230 femicides in the Dominican Republic last year. The hotline is 809 689-7212 and is serviced 24 hours.
Nevertheless, she said that the problem is not due to lack of resources in the Ministry as every time they have asked the Presidency has provided it and her ministry has a RD$300 million budget. She gave the example of the provision of ten vehicles to be used in the emergency program that will be distributed to the ten provinces with the highest incidence of violence against women.
She said that there is the need for all national sectors to pull together.
