Dominican track and field star Luguelin Santos has won gold in the 400 meters race in the IAAF World Junior Championships that are taking place in Barcelona. For him, the event is a tune up for the London Olympics in which he is a top-seeded competitor.

Some 178 countries and 1,74 athletes (964 men and 778 women) are competing in the event, the largest gathering in the history of the championships.

He won with a time of 44.85, followed by Arman Hall of the US with 45.39 and Steven Solomon of Australia with 45.52. His best time is 44.45, only bested by LaShawn Meritt with 44.12.

After winning Santos said:

"It is great to win the gold medal at the World Junior Championships although I am not too happy with my performance today. I could have done better. Since I started running in 2002 I have been dreaming about becoming a top athlete. For six years I have been training barefoot and now I can look forward to the Olympic Games. It is incredible. I hope that I qualify for the final to have the chance to fight for a medal."
