A court in El Seibo has ordered the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to issue the personal identification cards known as cedulas to more than 100 persons of Haitian parentage or descent that claim Dominican nationality. The court said that the JCE had violated the fundamental rights of these citizens. Similar cases have been presented and won in the courts of San Pedro de Macoris, Higuey, La Romana, Santiago de los Caballeros and Monte Plata, but are disputed by the Supreme Court of Justice that has ruled that the decisions are in violation to the Constitution and previous Supreme Court of Justice legal opinions.
