An interesting article in today's Listin Diario lists the questions that many have on inheritance taxes versus giving your property away while alive. Lawyer Edgar Barnichta Geara says that the laws are seriously out of line, since inheritance taxes are 3% and gift taxes are 25%. This means that if you give your child a vehicle, he can be charged 25% of its value when he goes to register it in his name. The lawyer says that the Department of Taxes (DGII) can also charge this 25% tax on monetary gifts as well.
