In 2009, anti-drug police advisor to President Leonel Fernandez, Marino Vinicio Castillo had alerted that there were around 300,000 Dominicans involved in either trafficking in drugs or consuming drugs. Three years later, he goes public again saying there are more than 300,000 drug consumers in the country. Castillo attributes the increase in drug consumption and trafficking to the country's central geographic location, and the penetration into society of drug trade operations from Mexico (Sinaloa and Zetas) and Russian mob into the Caribbean.

The lawyer and politician says that the illegal drug trade has made progress in the country due to its infiltration of the armed forces, police, political parties, business, banking and real estate purchases.

This week the government signed an agreement with US Homeland Security authorizing

the operation of the Predator, the unmanned spy plane for monitoring for drug trafficking.

Castillo announced that the government plans to implement more actions to reduce maritime smuggling of drugs and is moving ahead with the purchase of a sophisticated radar system from Israel with the idea being to acquire speedboats, well-equipped, and with good radar. Another measure in the works, is the creation of special courts for judging drug-related cases.
