The local council of the National District has announced the National Cemetery on Independencia Avenue would be restored to convert it into a tourist attraction.

The architect, Diana Martinez, director of Cultural Heritage and the Historic Center said the renovations would enhanced its historic value.

The plan includes the identification of those tombs containing the remains of important historical figures, such as those of the heroes of the 1965 Revolution. GPS will be used to identify the existing 1,433 tombs.

As well as the historical value, she says there is much artistic value in the mausoleums that need to be restored to their original state.

Also there needs to be a study of the trees in and around the cemetery as some of them could destroy the tombs.

At present, the National Cemetery, which is 16,000 square meters large, is in a deplorable condition, as the pathways have been destroyed, the graves are unkempt and there are animals living inside it.
