The director of the Center for Exports and Investment (CEI-RD), Eddy Martinez, defended the export of scrap metals on Wednesday 18 July, saying that so far this year the sector has generated US$173 million for the country, a sum ten times greater than what it receives from coffee. Last year scrap metal exports produced US$169 million, according to the newspapers. During a meeting with the Industry and Commerce Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, which is studying the legislative proposal for that law that will regulate Commerce and Export of Scrap Metals, Martinez proposed to place emphasis on the controls and measures aimed at preventing metal theft, which affects the state and the population.

He stressed that for a number of years scrap metal has been exported to countries like China or the United States, but in no way can the pillaging of public property be tolerated, even if it is for export. At the same time, Gregorio Lora, the assistant to the Director General of Customs, revealed to the deputies that the authorities are investigating two companies that export scrap metal and that might be bringing in prohibited substances in the ships that they use. He did not reveal details of the investigation that is being conducted by the National Drug Control Department.

Sectors have called for a ban on scrap metal given high rate of theft of metal items, including wiring, statues, and even bridge sections, to be sold for export.
