El Caribe reports on a company that is raising fish in cages out in the Caribbean Sea. The project plans to use as many as 48 large cages off the coast of Las Salinas in Bani. The company, Caribbean Seafarms, already has ten such cages in operation about eight kilometers offshore. Project director Jean Gagnon, a Canadian, told the newspaper that he saw the opportunity and he has obtained the permits for the Ministry of the Environment and from the Dominican Fisheries Council. They are raising Florida Pompano fish and have 360,000 in cages now. About 95% of the production will be exported and the rest sold on the local market. Both Jumbo and Nacional supermarkets are currently being supplied with the fish. Total investment in the project will be around US$5 million. Within three or four years, the Dominican Republic will be able to produce a large part of the 3,000 tons of fish that are currently imported, if financing and technical support are available.
