Luisin Mejia, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, has listed the top four Dominican athletes to watch for their high chances of winning medals at the London 2012 Olympics to take place 27 July-12 August.
The best hopes for the Dominican Republic's 35 athlete strong team, according to Mejia, are: Gabriel Mercedes (silver medalist in Beijing 2008) in taekwondo. He is training in Spain prior to traveling to London. Mejia also has high hopes for weightlifter Yudelkys Contreras, who is training in Santo Domingo. The other two star prospects mentioned by Mejia are runner Luguelin Santos, 400m and Yamilet Pena, in artistic gymnastics. Pena is currently training in Paris.
