Yesterday, Thursday 19 July, the president of General Hospital Plaza de la Salud, Dr. Julio Amado Castanos Guzman, announced that they had carried out the first heart transplant in the Dominican Republic.

The patient was Estephany Moreno, aged 22, who had been suffering from cardiomyopathy since giving birth two years ago. She has two children and lives in Sabana Perdida and as she has no medical insurance the costs are being borne by the hospital.

The procedure involved 15 specialists amongst a total team of 25 doctors, all Dominican.

Dr. Castanos said that although this marked the start of the heart transplant program, there had already been 75 transplants of different organs.

The medical team said that the operation had been satisfactory and that the heart was 100% compatible.
