The mayor of the National District, Roberto Salcedo, has announced plans at a press conference for a Tourist Route in Santo Domingo to make the most of the anticipated increase in tourists when the Coral Highway from Punta Cana is completed.

He said that he is hoping the cost of this mega project will come from both government and private sector funds in order to remodel and renovate the route starting at the Malecon and covering 25 kilometers through Santo Domingo in open top vehicles and buses designed especially for tourists.

The Tourist Route could include many key sites such as Parque Colon, Puerta del Conde, the National District Fire Station, National Palace, Plaza de la Cultura, the Parque Ambiental (former National Zoo), University area and la Guacara Taina.

Salcedo said that he is hoping for government support, with ten million tourists coming to the country and that the private sector would also benefit from more tourists in the capital, so he was also hoping for their participation.
