Security was reinforced, office work, classes and a visit by President Leonel Fernandez to the UASD for the inaugural of the renovations at the university cafeteria and the new administrative tower at the state university were called off this Monday. Protests against increases in tuition and fees for the summer term at the UASD escalated on Friday when anarchists burned the Hyundai Santa Fe of the vice rector and damaged four other vehicles parked outside the office of the rector. The vandalism occurred after the university council decided to expel 11 that had participated in violent protests. Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet explained the rises occurred because the government has not honored the law that establishes a fixed percentage of the National Budget for the UASD.

On Friday, the rector called in the police that sent 200 agents to reinforce the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo security. Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet accused the Federacion de Estudiantes Dominicanos, for having called in "brigades" from the Frente Amplio de Lucha Popular (Falpo) that caused damages and shot against security forces.

The president of the FED, 39-year old Ambiorix Rosario Garcia distanced the student body from the violence. Apparently a professional student, he was admitted in 1991 to study medicine and attributes his long years of studying to having been expelled five times. He said the protests would continue.

The rector and employees of the university forcefully had to remain four hours inside the rector's building after vandalism peaked with the damaging of the vehicles that were parked outside the building at 5pm on Friday when the decision to expel the students was known. Rocks were thrown at the rector building, destroying several glass windows.

To control the situation, the Police under General Juan Brown Perez and Neivis Luis Perez Sanchez used tear gas. Students at the FED building were told to board Police units and were taken to the unit of criminal intelligence of the Police. Around 50 were investigated and later released. It is unclear if the protesters are all students.

Interviewed on El Bulevar con Pablo McKinney TV show this Monday morning, Aquino Febrillet said that the UASD has 180,000 students and that 3,200 professors teach at 100 locations. He says overall, in the DR there are 300,000 university students and 13,000 university teachers. He said that while the UASD has 60% of the university students, it only has 24% of the teachers. Nevertheless, the UASD budget is by far larger than the budget of the private universities, with the government allotting much more per student to the UASD than to the much more efficient private universities.
