Paola Cuevas Baez, representing the National District, a student at the New Horizons bilingual school won first place in the 8th National Mathematics Contest that was televised. The contest is organized by every year by the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Education. Banco de Reservas general manager, Vicente Bengoa awarded Cuevas the winner certificate and the RD$50,000 prize. Together with other contestants she received RD$8,000 plus a laptop computer from the Ministry of Education.

Competing in the final rounds were Elvis Perez Perez, of Duarte province; Eliana Alba Ruiz, La Romana; Jose Anibal Rodriguez Lopez, Monte Cristi; Mitzy Daniella Freeman Beltre, Peravia; Juan Francisco Perez Medina, San Cristobal; Bernardo Sosa Gomez, Santiago; and Ezequiel Frias Cuevas, Santo Domingo.

The finalists were Cuevas Baez, Rodriguez Lopez, Freeman Beltre, Perez Medina y Sosa Gomez. 32 junior and senior high school students participated in the contest representing the provinces and the National District.
