During the first four months of this year the consumption of beer fell by 2.7% compared to a similar period last year. Beer consumption went from 5,866,399.7 liters to 5,703,063.8 liters, a decrease of 163,335.2 liters. Nonetheless, beer consumption had increased last year by 2.9% in relation to 2010. Consumption went from 18,378,806 liters to 18,937,100 liters, an increase of 558,294 liters, according to the numbers from the Department of Taxes (DGII).

In January of this year, beer consumption was 1,280,022 liters. It went up in February to 1,444,589 million liters. By March, it had reached 1,617,780. However, in April consumption went down to 1,360,743 liters. The month with the greatest consumption last year was December, with 2.184,983 liters of beer.

Regarding rum, the data from the DGII indicates that consumption was down by 1.7%, equal to 58,495 liters, going from 3,407,383 in the first four months of 2011 to 3.348,888 liters for the same period this year. Also, rum consumption was down last year by 1.8%, going from 11,738,308 liters to 11,526,778 liters, some 211,529 liters less. The highest consumption was in December with 1,708 ,333 liters. In the first four months of this year, the largest consumption took place in March with 1,035,525 liters.

The good news is that statistics also show tht smoking is down. According to the DGII, in the first four months of this year there were 600,875,370 units sold, while during the same period last year the number was 632,126,535 units a decrease of 31,251,200 units or a significant decrease of 4.9%. Last year sales also were down going from 2.242 billion units to 2.086 billion units.
