President Leonel Fernandez forecast yesterday that the Gross Domestic Product will be above US$120 billion by 2012. He spoke at the Presidential Palace on occasion of being recognized by the Dominican College of Economists. He said that since he returned to government in 2004 to the present, the Dominican Republic economy has grown on average 7.2% a year. He attributed the growth to the professional competence of his administration's staff, mentioning Temistocles Montas, Hector Valdez Albizu, Vicente Bengoa and Daniel Toribio.

"If we can maintain this stability, achieving an average growth rate of no less than 6% per year, maintaining the confidence of domestic investors and continuing to attract foreign investors, the Dominican Republic could within a decade show a Gross Domestic Product of more than US$120 billion," said Fernandez, whose term ends 16 August 2012.
