The Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology Ligia Amada Melo said that the disturbances at the UASD give rise to the opportunity to get rid of those students who have been studying for 8 years or more, some even 15 years, and who are taking up space that could be used by those who truly want to study. Among the professional students is the president of the Federation of Students (FED), Ambiorix Rosario a professional medicine student who has more than 25 years at the state university, and who led many of the recent protests. She observed that a student who takes more than 8 years to finish a four-year career has other objectives different from the career in mind.

The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) will open its doors again today from 7 am, and start normal activities, having been closed after student protests for an increase in tuition and fees escalated to vandalism against university property.

Tuition at the UASD for the summer session went from RD$6 to RD$20 the credit. The RD$6 tuition had been in place since 1990. A cost of a semester at the UASD now starts at RD$480, plus RD$300 registration fee.

Melo justified that Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet called for the police to intervene during the unrest. She said had he not done so then half of the university would have been burned down.
