PLD senator for Azua, Rafael Calderon, a PRD-dissident who was a technical secretary of the Presidency during the 2000-2004 administration of President Hipolito Mejia (PRD, 2000-2004), was voted by the party to be the spokesman for the ruling PLD party in Congress, as reported in El Caribe. The La Romana senator, Amarilis Santana is the deputy spokesperson. In 2009, Calderon was expelled from the PD when it was known that he was negotiating the senate seat for Azua with President Leonel Fernandez.
In the Chamber of Deputies, PLD deputy Gustavo Sanchez was chosen the spokesman, and Juan Suazo Jorge, the deputy spokesman.
