A 52-year old woman yesterday became the second Dominican to receive a heart transplant in the country. The first was at the Plaza de la Salud Hospital, the second at the Cardio Neuro Ophthalmological and Transplant Center (Cecanot).

The patient suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy and is responding well to the procedure. Her doctors nevertheless say the first 48 hours are the most critical hours. The director of Cecanot, Dr. Federico Nunez said that relatives of a 22-year old who died after suffering a traffic accident donated his heart. The family also donated kidneys and corneas that are expected to benefit other patients.

The donor had been taken to the Ney Arias Lora Public Hospital. Following his death, the donated organs were transferred to Cecanot on board the Santo Domingo Metro getting there in 23 minutes in time for the transplant.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health Nelson Rodriguez Monegro said that this case marks the start of the National Program for Heart Transplants in the Dominican Republic under the Ministry of Public Health. The plan is open to poor people who otherwise could not afford the operations.

Besides Nunez, who headed the group, the medical team also included Wascar Roa, Alexandro Marte, Carlos Garcia, Isidro Cueto and Wilson Ramirez.
